Recipient Spotlight, Patricia Kumbakisaka

Diplomatic by nature and driven by faith, Patricia Kumbakisaka, Class of 2007, embodies the kind of global leadership grounded in compassion, conviction, and community. A proud MBCI “lifer,” Patricia attended the school from Grade 7 through 12, and credits those formative years with shaping the values and vision that have guided her life ever since.

Born into a diplomatic family and raised across continents, Patricia developed an early passion for international relations. After graduating from MBCI, she pursued a BA in International Relations at the University of Manitoba, followed by studies in peace and conflict resolution at the University of Ottawa and a certificate in cultural diplomacy from the United Nations. That global perspective—rooted in Christ-centered purpose—has led her to serve Canada at the highest levels, representing the nation in matters of diplomacy, migration, and human rights.

But for Patricia, leadership has never been just about the job title. It’s about serving others. Whether supporting newcomers at immigrant centres in Winnipeg, representing African cultures through Folklorama as both a Pavilion and Ambassador General, or volunteering with her church community—including mission work in Tijuana—Patricia’s life reflects a deep commitment to building bridges across difference.

That same passion took shape during her time at MBCI, where she immersed herself in music, athletics, student government, and cultural programming. She fondly recalls teachers who not only encouraged her academically, but also saw and spoke to her potential: “They told me I was going places before I ever believed it myself,” she says. Teachers like Mr. Visch and Ms. Blawat didn’t just instruct—they affirmed her calling.

Patricia’s work has been recognized with numerous national honours, including the Global Excellence Award, Young Leader of Canada Award, and Most Accomplished Black Canadian Woman (2020). Yet receiving the MBCI Distinguished Alumni Award holds a unique weight for her. “It’s deeply humbling,” she says. “To be recognized by the place that helped shape who I am—it’s not just about what I’ve done, it’s about where I started.”

Reflecting on MBCI’s core values—Christ-centered living, commitment to learning, compassionate engagement, and servant leadership—Patricia affirms they are not just ideals, but daily practices. “My faith is at the heart of everything I do. Whether I’m presenting policy or mentoring a newcomer, I pray first. Because the work is bigger than me.”

To current students wondering how they can make an impact, Patricia offers this advice: “Follow your dreams with confidence, don’t give up and never underestimate the power of your voice and your values. Whether your calling is local or global, lead with integrity, curiosity, and kindness. Look for ways to serve others because true leadership begins with service.”

We are proud to honour Patricia Kumbakisaka as a 2025 MBCI Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Her journey reminds us that the most impactful leaders are those who lead with faith, humility, and a heart for others—wherever in the world they are called to serve.
