on innovative
and effective approaches
to rigorous education.

and diversity.
What's the Difference?

MBCI is education grounded in purpose. The ways that students learn here – and the intention with which we build our school culture – put into practice the best of what we know about how young people learn and grow.

Our project-based, real-world, and student-centered approach to learning supports students in becoming creative problem-solvers capable of navigating the complexity of 21st century challenges. Our Christ-centered approach to building community and connections supports students as they grow in character and faith, and in their ability to serve and care for the world around them.

We like to articulate the answer to “Why MBCI” within what we call the Habits & Characteristics of an MBCI Graduate. If you take a tour of our campus you will see these values posted in classrooms, in our hallways, student lounges, and even hanging on banners from the ceiling. More than just words, we display them prominently so that we can keep within our sights the habits and characteristics we hope to nurture in our students during their time at MBCI.

Habits & Characteristics of an MBCI Graduate
Learning and Growth

Students at MBCI learn in an environment designed with care. Rather than just memorizing information, learning invites curiosity and engagement. Our goal is for students to develop deep understanding as well as knowledge. When students are presented with real-world questions and problems, then invited to apply their own curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving skills to those questions, they grow in their ability to think critically and with discernment. Students are encouraged to practice a "growth mindset"; taking risks in their learning and developing the resilience to view setbacks as stepping stones that lead to continued growth.

Experience and research show us that high levels of expectation - along with high levels of support - help to nurture students' abilities to achieve their goals both now and in the future.

Faith

MBCI students learn in a Christ-centered environment shaped by the teachings of Jesus and rooted in Anabaptist, Mennonite Brethren theology. Through chapel, biblical studies courses, the lived example of MBCI staff and the ways that teachers weave faith into daily learning within the classroom,  students will grow in their understanding of what it means to live a Christ-centered life that reflects the practices of discipleship, peace & reconciliation, community, and service.

Our hope is to nurture within our students the ability to look beyond themselves to the ways that they can serve others, and move into the world with compassion for all.

Leadership

Every student has a voice. Our goal at MBCI is to walk alongside students in developing the character and skills they will need to discover their own voice and to raise it with integrity.

Leadership will look different from student to student as will the strategies they choose to express their voices. For some, leadership may look like taking on a public role in planning school events with Student Council or League of Leaders, participating in the Student Worship Team, speaking in chapel, or serving as captain of a team. For others leadership might take a different form like modeling constructive behaviour, taking on added responsibility in a project, or offering quiet support to someone who is struggling.

Regardless of differences in personality and giftedness, we know that effective leadership is best communicated in the context of relationships and servanthood, and that all students have the capacity to grow in leadership ability.

Community

We think of MBCI as a community of learners where students are able to build connections and feel part of something bigger than themselves. A variety of opportunities and strategies like classroom collaboration, clubs, teams, retreats, and "Crews", help to build relationships, respect, and belonging within a diverse and inclusive environment.

Community is not just about our own sense of belonging however; it includes how we understand the world. We encourage our students to care for others as community-minded citizens - as stewards of the world who engage in the work of caring for the environment and those in need.

Leadership

The MBCI Leadership Team works together, and alongside teachers and staff, to translate our vision and mission into the daily experiences of our students. Along with the MBCI Board of Directors, our leadership shares a commitment to equipping students to learn, love, and engage with the world.
