How We Learn

May 2025

Learning at MBCI is guided by our vision of equipping students to learn, love, and engage with the world. We take a student-centered, inquiry-based approach to curriculum through which students apply their own curiosity and hands-on problem-solving skills in a real-world context whenever possible.

Grade 5 Bible Class Builds Relationships at Bethania Personal Care Home

This year our Grade 5 class has partnered with Bethania Personal Care Home as part of their Bible course. Approximately once a month, the class visits Bethania to participate in their recreational program and to spend time with residents. Students will also lead residents in a chapel service two times throughout the year when they will share about what they have learned in Bible class about how God is faithful in relationships with his people.

Grade 6 English Class Commemorates 80 Years of MBCI

Our Grade 6 students are working on a newspaper project as part of their English course. They chose the topic of MBCI’s 80th anniversary as the focus for their paper, and are planning articles on a variety of topics including memorable moments in the past and the history of the Hawk mascot.
Consulting with experts is an important research focus within Project Based Learning and the class has taken a behind-the-scenes tour of the Winnipeg Free Press, met with Free Press writers and the Editor-in-Chief, as well as conducted interviews with MBCI staff. We are looking forward to seeing their final product and reading the stories revealed by their curiosity.

Grade 10 Science Students Practice Conservation Skills at Oak Hammock Marsh

Field learning is an important focus at MBCI, with students applying their knowledge of course content within a real-world context. Our Grade 10 science students recently visited Oak Hammock Marsh to get up close and personal with their Earth Science and Life Systems content. Students were able to survey various parts of the marsh and perform water testing, while also learning about its conservation history, its inhabitants, and its ecological significance to Manitoba. The class also got to enjoy some Indigenous land-based games, learning about the skills that can be gained through playing.

Grade 12 Physics Design and Build Functional Furniture from Cardboard

As a project in their Grade 12 course, students were challenged to “build a strong, modular, and cool cardboard chair that will become popular amongst middle school students”. The design process included: defining the problem; research; generating and selecting concepts; creating, refining and testing designs at various scales; creating a final design; and then reflection. Students then presented the unique features of their creations to groups of middle school students,  before moving the chairs to a middle school hallway

to be tested and where students will have a chance to vote on their favourite design. Using a Project Based Learning approach like this helps nurture creativity, curiosity, design, the ability to give and receive feedback, serving others with our work, collaboration, and communication – in ways that lead students to become deeper and more resilient learners.
