Computer Science Grade 10

Here is the link to my tutorials on Youtube.

March and April

Term 3 Kodu and Personal Project

We have completed a section on Kodu. This is a free game creating
software package that is available to all for download at home.
The graphics are cartoonlike but of very good quality.
The students have learned how to program games and have been assigned

3 games to create:
1. A race style game with scores.
2. A maze type game with the walls of a castle.
3. A golf game with multiple holes.
Students now are brainstorming to come up with their own idea for a
game. They will have to describe this game in advance and then actually
create the game that they have envisioned.
Remember to check my tutorials using the link above!

May 3 2012 - Students have completed their personal projects and presented them to the class. Overall well done!!

We are now studying the "GameMaker 8.1" software package. It is a free game creation program that is available freely online.

Term 3 Blender

Well we are about half way through term 3. Blender has been a lot of fun to teach. My grade 11 students are awesome and very creative.
Here is an outline for a test.
  1. Place different objects on a scene – cube, plane, sphere etc.
  2. Give this object a color or texture also via the UV texture panel. (2 sided)
  3. Make an object dynamic, static etc.
  4. Using the F4 panels – make the object move with arrow keys.
  5. Set up a scoring system using the Debug properties and an HUD.
  6. Collect objects for points (collision/ near).
  7. End an object when hit.
  8. Open a door via IPO.
  9. HUD study sheet

Term 2 Flash

Well we have finished Term 1 and I personally enjoyed teaching Visual Basic once again. But now it is time to move on to Flash.
Flash is an animation program. You can just use that side of this program and never learn to code in ActionScript (the programming language built into Flash).
We will do both. So far we have done the following projects.
1. Create a city scene with a car that moves. We made wheels that spin.
a) We learned how to go from daytime to nightime in an animation.
b) We learned both how to import ready made graphics and also to create new graphics using the Flash tools.
2. Instead of have the car the students learned how to make the background scroll across the screen.
3. Our current project is to create a 3 scene animation where a superhero rescues someone. (3 different rescues).
4. We will then start to learn how to further manipulate Flash with programming in ActionScript.
     a) We will be creating some games ranging from basic to intermediate difficulty levels.
There will be no test before Christmas.

Term 1 Visual Basic

Practice test

We will be doing Units 3 to 6 in the VB text book.

My teacher-designed projects are contained in a booklet that is
given to each student.
Below is partial list of the projects I have created for this class.

1.     Weather Project
2.     Click the picture (Simple Game)
3.     Race project
4.     Don’t Eat the Candies (Game)

We have already completed the projects above. We are now
working on :
5.     A game of Pong
6.     After Pong comes : Brick Breaker Game
7.     Then a bit of a challenge for the students :
Working in teams to collaborate on a game.
Very little help will come from the teacher.
I will ask them to combine ideas they have
previously learned and create a new game.

As the year progresses I will attempt to teach new  coding techniques
and then challenge the students to collaborate and complete sections
of projects by brainstorming and sharing ideas.
