Waiting for Rescue

Psalm 146:5-10 (NIV, ©2010)

5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God.

6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
   he remains faithful forever.
7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets prisoners free,
8 the LORD gives sight to the blind,
the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
   the LORD loves the righteous.
9 The LORD watches over the foreigner
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

 10 The LORD reigns forever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.

   Praise the LORD.

“Don’t go in the mud!” I was only four, but the instructions still ring in my ears. We were visiting my grandparents. No doubt my younger brother’s and my energy in the house seriously impaired the adults’ ability to visit. It had just rained heavily-hence the warning.

Like metal filings to a magnet we went across the gravel parking area, across the spacious lawn, straight to the mud. The quagmire overpowered our young legs, and there we stood-stuck, helpless, in need of rescue.

Is that how you feel as you read this inspiring hymn of God’s faithfulness and care? This year we have seen great suffering as a result of earthquake, human error (Gulf oil spill), illness, unemployment, persecution, power-mad dictators, hatred and greed. Are you tempted to feelings of helplessness as though you were stuck in the mud?

These verses remind us of Jesus’ first sermon in his hometown, where he claimed that he was sent by God to do the very things of which the verses speak-to pro- claim good news to the poor, to release the prisoners and the oppressed, and to give sight to the blind (Luke 4:16-19). He, God in human form, began his mission by living among humans, continued by healing individuals, and by defeating evil and death when he died on the cross and rose again to life. Today he works through his body, the church, to bring life, healing, and hope. As we do his work, we wait for his return, when all will be set to right.

Prayer: Jesus, may we be your hands, feet, eyes, ears, and mouth in your rescue mission. Grant us hope while we wait for your return. “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Rev. 22:20).
