 Devotional                          THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16th, 2010      Day 5

A King who Cares

Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19 (NIV, ©2010)

 1 Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.
2 May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.

3 May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness.
4 May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy;
   may he crush the oppressor.
5 May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations.
6 May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth.
7 In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

18 Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.
19 Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
            Amen and Amen.

The language of “kings” and “kingdoms” sounds archaic to our ears. We prefer democracy; we want to hold our leaders accountable; we want to be able to vote them out of office.

Yet God is no elected leader, Jesus no puppet king. God’s Kingdom is not subject to constitutional amendments. No revolution or democratic reform will ever reduce God’s sovereignty, or Christ’s claim to be “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

That is one side of the story. Here’s the other. Ancient monarchs were known for ruling with an iron fist, conscripting commoners into slavery (or into their armies or harems), taxing the poor to build magnificent temples. Too often they ruled for the benefit of their dynasty and their supporters. Christ is a king, but the polar opposite of such monarchs. Our text for today portrays the ideal king, characterized by righteousness and justice, defending the afflicted, standing with the needy, using force only to stop misused power, bringing shalom, filling the earth with God’s glory. That is the kind of king God is. That is the kind of kingdom Jesus established.

Jesus’ rule was the powerful rule of a slain lamb, defeating enemies by loving them, bringing peace by laying down his life ― because that is the only kind of rule that can lead to resurrection life and to God’s all- encompassing shalom.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, King of Kings, babe in a manger, king on a cross, slain lamb who rules the world, come spread your kingdom of peace. Amen.
