Vision that Leads to Action

Isaiah 11:1-10 (NIV, ©2010)

 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD—

3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
   with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.
7 The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together,
   and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 The infant will play near the cobra’s den, the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

Advent is a time of dreams: sugar plums, presents, peace, freedom from fear, the whole earth filled with the fullness of God. Isaiah 11:1-10 is one of the most memorable visions in all of Scripture: shoots from stumps, branches bearing fruit, a Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge, and the fear of the LORD resting on God’s servant, the Messiah. Judgments on behalf of the needy are made with righteousness and justice. These standards guide our interactions with one another, the earth, and the animal kingdom. The whole earth will dwell together in peace. Evil will be slain. This peaceable kingdom where no one will harm or destroy is God’s intent for the world. Such a transformation depends on the earth being “full of the knowledge of the LORD” (v. 9).

This is such a different vision from the ones that fill our television screens--floods in Pakistan cover millions of homes; exploding gas lines, hurricanes and forest fires destroy; wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Israel keep us in constant turmoil.

How do we live in a world of violence and terror and continue to bring God’s peace?

The first night in our home in Africa where we were missionaries, a snake slithered over my leg. I picked it up and threw it on the floor. The snake made its way out into the bush harmlessly. At that moment and many times since then, I have felt God granting me peace in the midst of danger. What can you pick up that will stop violence and lead to peace?

Prayer: Thank you, O God, that the peaceable kingdom where all dwell in safety is your purpose for all of creation. Empower us, O God, to work for peace and justice in all the earth. Amen!
