Welcoming the Morning

Romans 13:11-14 (NIV, ©2010)

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

I am not generally known as a cheerful morning riser. One year, probably at Christmas, my sister and I found ourselves back at home. We were well into adulthood but the patterns of childhood still came easily when we found ourselves back in the parental fold. I was asleep in my old bedroom when my sister came in to wake me. She cautiously touched my shoulder and said softly, “Valerie, it’s time to get up,” and then before I could say a word in response she blurted out anxiously, “Mom made me wake you!”

In today’s scripture reading, the apostle Paul is trying his best to wake his readers to the reality of their situation. The time is short. The day of salvation is almost at hand. It is time to get up!

Paul’s use of such familiar imagery, the darkness turning to light, is about more than just rubbing the sleep from our eyes or getting ready to face the day. Paul suggests that in anticipation of Christ’s coming, we make sure to throw off the deeds that are associated with darkness and embrace the light. For Paul, this means living in ways that demonstrate allegiance to a risen Christ. Indeed, we are to be clothed in Jesus Christ.

During this advent season we are reminded that Jesus is coming again. This means that Paul’s words are still timely in their encouragement to live righteous lives as befits followers of Jesus. The time for sleeping is over. The light is nearly here ― wake up!

Prayer: Loving God, help us to clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ so that we may truly welcome the morning light.
