Counting the Days Until Christmas
Matthew 24:36-44 (NIV, ©2010)
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
We call this season “Advent.” We are re-living the time of waiting for Christ’s first Advent. And we spend it preparing to celebrate Christmas, the birth of the baby in Bethlehem.
“How many days ‘til Christmas?” eager children ask. We know exactly. And if we don’t daily consult our calendars, advertisers blare the message, “Shop here! Only 26 days left!” [counting Sundays of course]. “About that day and hour” everyone knows.
How different as we think of Jesus’ Second Ad- vent. Thousands have tried to predict the day or hour of Jesus’ Second Coming. Their success rate so far has been 0%. We cannot know when the final day of reck- oning and reward will come. It will surprise us, our text tells us, no less than it surprised those eating and drinking in Noah’s day, when the flood suddenly came upon them.
So we keep watch! We keep watch, not in order to know but because we cannot know. Keeping watch is not predicting. Keeping watch is not even scanning the horizon for storm clouds or the newspapers for “signs of the times.” Keeping watch means being ready. It means being faithful, so that when the Son of Man re- turns at an hour we do not expect and cannot predict, we will be ready.
Waiting to celebrate Christ’s First Advent and waiting to participate in Christ’s Second Advent are really quite different. We know exactly how many days we have left to prepare for Christmas. We have no idea how many days we have left to prepare for Christ’s Second Coming.
Prayer: Lord, as we prepare to celebrate your First Coming, please prepare us, too. Make us ready at every moment for your Second Coming. Amen.
