Incredible Change

Galatians 2:20 ~ I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ben’s Story:

“I was a crystal meth addict. I was squatting in a North End basement apartment and on December 1st, 2009, a voice woke me up saying, “Get up or you’re going die.” I know now that the voice was God. I obeyed and got up and left. I didn’t know where I was going, but I ended up at the doors of the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM). Somehow I knew there was something bigger than me with me, carrying me. I didn’t know how to pray or whom I was praying to, but I started praying and was comforted very step of the way. I got into the Addictions Foundation and asked for a Bible, and I’ve been reading it ever since.”

This is a brief story about Ben, a recovering crystal meth addict and a fellow Christian who attends my church. He got baptized last year and has been allowing God space to make some changes in his life. He’s currently taking some classes through a program called the School of Urban Leadership or SOUL that meets in the Christian Family Centre church right next door to MBCI.

Ben says, “I signed up for SOUL, the School of Urban Leadership, because I’m thirsty for more of God. When I was in the AFM, I had only the clothes on my back: a sweater, jeans, and shoes. That’s it. I prayed for clothes and two garbage bags of clothes were dropped off for me. I even got a winter jacket. This is just one example of God showing me he’s real. I want to know more. I want to surrender to Him. I can’t get enough of Him.”

There’s never a place where God can’t reach you. Here’s the thing – the theme of our year in a lot of ways – we have to choose to obey what he asks of us. In Ben’s case, it saved his life listening to God telling him to get up. But Ben had a choice – he could’ve stayed down. Thank God he didn’t. Now he’s a vibrant person in Winnipeg, making a positive impact for Jesus.

Prayer:  Dear God – Thank you that no matter where we are at, you are looking out for us and keeping an eye on us. Help us to hear your voice and obey – it could save our life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
