Global Focus

Interesting facts about Brazil: It is the largest South American country, and the fifth largest country in the world. They mainly speak Portuguese instead of Spanish. It is one of the only countries that have rain forest, desert, deciduous forest, mountains, swamps, coastal areas and plains. Almost all of its energy comes from renewable sources or natural gas, hardly ever from oil - what oil they do use is not imported; it comes from Brazil

Devotional                     THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2010      Day 3

Continued from yesterday. . .

As the days rolled by, kids, schools, businesses, and charitable organizations across the USA set up lemonade stands – all to benefit the newly created Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. Every U.S. state boasted at least one stand. Some had hundreds. Canada and France joined in as well.

Senior citizen stirred up gallons and gallons of Country Time. So did inner-city schools and juvenile detention centers. At least one stand was planned and staffed by a band of homeless people.

A month after Alex and her team had poured their last 2004 glass of lemonade, she was almost three-quarters of the way to that miraculous million-dollar goal. Car manufacturer Volvo assured her that it would close the money gap, whether it was tens of thousands, or a couple hundred thousand.

Alex didn’t see the end of 2004. On August 1 she passed away, peacefully, with her mother and father each holding her hands. But not before she saw her dream come true: more than a million dollars raised to help find a cure for a disease that took her life. To be exact, $1.4 million.

“What she had done, what she accomplished in her life, still amazes me,” her mother says. “She was a girl who wanted all the same things other girls want, but she couldn’t have them. So she made the best of what she could have. And then some.”

At Alex’s funeral, her mom took the pulpit at Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Maw, Pennsylvania, and delivered the eulogy. “We have heard people say that Alex lost her battle with cancer,” she said. “We believe that this could not be farther from the truth. Alex won her battle in so many ways . . . by never giving up hope, by living life to the fullest, and by leaving an incredible legacy of hope and inspiration for all of us.”

That remarkable legacy still thrives today. Every summer, more than eight million Alex’s Lemonade Stands provide their sour-but-sweet elixir to thirsty people around the world. The result: More than $30 million raised, for more than eighty cancer-related projects. Projects that seek cures and treatment. Projects that make existing treatments available to more kids. Projects that reduce the harmful side effects of today’s most aggressive cancer treatments.

And it all started with a little girl, a dream, and the courage to make that dream happen. Oh, and a simple glass of lemonade.

Proverbs 31:9 reads ~ Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers. (MSG)

Prayer:

Dear God – We’ll keep hearing stories of people doing incredible things in the world. Help it to ignite a desire within us to serve others. When you give us ideas, help us to pull our courage together and start putting it into action one step at a time.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
