Global Focus

Interesting facts about Brazil: It is the largest South American country, and the fifth largest country in the world. They mainly speak Portuguese instead of Spanish. It is one of the only countries that have rain forest, desert, deciduous forest, mountains, swamps, coastal areas and plains. Almost all of its energy comes from renewable sources or natural gas, hardly ever from oil - what oil they do use is not imported; it comes from Brazil

Devotional                     WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH, 2010      Day 2

Continued from yesterday. . .

Alex kept committed to her venture. By 2002 Alex’s Lemonade Stand had begun to attract national attention like an electronic magnet. Her story was featured on Oprah, The Today Show, The CBS Evening News, CNN, Fox News, and dozens of other network and cable TV programs. Sports Illustrated shared her story, as did Good Housekeeping, People, USA Today, and hundreds of other newspapers and magazines worldwide. She made several “People of the Year” top-ten lists. That year the stand raised $12,000. Alex dedicated her 2002 donation in the name of her friend Toireasa, who had died of neuroblastoma earlier in the year.

The next summer brought an Old Testament-style rainstorm to Alex’s Pennsylvania hometown on the day of the lemonade stand. Still, people lined up like they were at a rock concert. The president of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers showed up in person with a large donation. The 2003 results: $18,000.

In 2004, USA Today named eight-year-old Alex one of twenty-one people whose lives made a global impact in the worlds of business, entertainment or sports.

That was the year Liz told her daughter that – given a worsening economy – if the stand raised three or four thousand dollars, “that would be a lot. Even two thousand would be fine too.” Alex disagreed. “She said,” Liz recalls, “that she thought she would raise more than that.” And this projection was from a girl who had endured six operations and dozens of other treatments over the course of the past three years.

Alex turned out to be right. During the 2004 version of her annual venture, the stand, held at Alex and Patrick’s elementary school, amassed $40,000. In just one day. Alex, severely weakened by her disease, witnessed the success from a wheelchair.

But the success wasn’t limited to one suburb of Philadelphia. Other people were starting to get into the lemonade groove, mixing up their own concoctions for the sake of charity. The success gave wings to a big hope for Alex: she wanted to raise a million dollars for pediatric cancer research by the year’s end.

Alex had proven herself a remarkable kid. But no matter how miraculously things went, a charity based on a few summer lemonade stands wasn’t going to earn a million bucks.

Thousands of lemonade stands, though, that was another story. Alex’s health was waning, but news of her efforts had spread like seeds in the wind. Responses to a Web site created by Alex and her parents revealed an amazing truth: Alex’s Lemonade Stands had gone nationwide and beyond.

I Timothy 4:12 ~ Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Prayer: Dear God – You’ve given us talents, you given us ideas and you’ve blessed us with the privilege of knowing you if we want to. Thanks for the opportunity to serve you in this world and bring your message of love to all people.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
