Take a Stroll

Genesis 5:24 ~ “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away,”

Likely one of the most underrated stories of the Bible is the story of Enoch. It’s a story that has always resonated with me. Our time with Enoch in scripture is short, though we are informed that he lived for 365 years. All that time is only summarized into four short sentences, but the effect it has had on me is insurmountable. We are introduced to Enoch as a man, who at the age of 65, had his son Methuselah. believe it or not, Enoch is one of the younger fathers in the Bible. After his son was born, Enoch walked with God for 300 years. I have always wondered what the Bible meant by “walked with God.” What did walking with God look like for Enoch? Did it mean that he prayed every day, fasted twice a week, and fed the poor every weekend? Did it literally mean that Enoch took a stroll with God everyday? Whatever it meant, it was pleasing to God, because in Genesis 5:24, it states that God took him away one day. No need for Enoch to experience the unknown of death, rather the assurance of leaving the earth with his creator. What a gift. For the longest time I would read this with a bit of discomfort. Too often I am stumped with what it means to “walk with God.”  I think it means to line up my thoughts and actions with what God wants. Sometimes it feels more like I am chasing after God trying to catch up, trying to match my steps to his. The harder I try to catch up, the more tired and discouraged I feel. I wonder if Enoch ever felt these feelings? He must have; it’s only human.

It was then that I realized something that I have never noticed before. Enoch lived until he was 365, but it says he walked with God for 300 years. This always made me wonder: what in the world was Enoch doing for the first 65 years of his life? Maybe Enoch wasn’t walking with God, maybe Enoch was trying to do his own thing. Maybe Enoch didn’t even know who God was. Regardless though, Enoch is remembered for the time he tried to walk with God. It gives me hope, that even when I try to walk with God, and constantly stumble, that I, like Enoch, will be remembered by God. Not for my years before knowing God, but rather my years trying to walk with God. As I walk with God, I too won’t know the sting of death because of Jesus Christ who saved me.

Prayer:

Dear God – Please strengthen me as I try to walk alongside you, and live for you. Thank you that you forgive my past and guide my future. Thank you that I don’t have to face death alone, because you sent your son to die for me.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
