Devotional            Day 5, Wednesday, September 29TH, 2010

Listen to your Heart

Matthew 11:28-30 ~ Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Yesterday I encouraged you to listen to your heart. There’s another way you can listen to your heart. It’s when your heart is heavy and you can’t figure out why. You’ve taken time to consider what is bothering you or getting you down, but you can’t put your finger on it.

I think often it can be fears that we have. Some of us have fears of being alone – we love being in groups and when we feel uninvited, emotions rise within us. We would rather stay away from home when no one else is there.

Some of us have fears of screwing something up. We’re afraid of failing in something, or worse, letting someone else down. We love when we succeed. But when there’s risk of failure, we get anxious, uneasy and we might even throw up.

Some of us have fears of being rejected. We’ve done our best to be at peace with everyone and whenever there’s a conflict, we get nervous and we’ll say anything to smooth it over, even maybe lie if it will protect the friendship.

Some of us have fears for the future. When we’re asked to make some goals, it’s really tough because we don’t know what the future holds. We get nervous thinking about tomorrow or next year because there’s still so much to do today. The unknown can be super scary.

Some of us are just plain scared of the dark. Knowing we have to walk home in the dark gets our stomach in knots. We’d much rather skip a practice so we can get home before the sun sets.

Fears are normal; we all have them. Like emotions, fears shouldn’t rule us though. Fears trigger emotional feelings and all of a sudden, we do or say something that doesn’t seem like ourselves. You have two options with fears: run away or confront them head on.

I would like to encourage you to take a moment to consider a fear that you have. What is it? When did you first realize you had this? Is it controlling you? As you listen to your heart, consider asking God to carry your fear so that you don’t have to.

Amen
