Devotional Day 4 TUESDAY, September 28TH, 2010
Listen to your Heart
Proverbs 23:15-19 ~ My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice! Everything in me will celebrate when you speak what is right. Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord. You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed. My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course.
There are some days that my heart feels heavy. As I mentioned yesterday, on days such as these, I used let my heavy heart be seen by all. I sometimes make it very apparent that I am not enjoying my day.
I’m starting to learn that I have to listen to my heart. I’ve started taking a moment to ask God, “What’s bothering me?”, because I can’t even remember. I’ve found out that it works. I physically stop what I’m doing and take a moment to listen to God and find out what my heart is feeling, what my spirit is experiencing.
Sometimes I find out that I’m bothered about something I cannot change. A student is struggling with something really difficult, a friend is going through a really rough time, someone didn’t say hi to me in the hallway (when I said hi to them), and more. These are things I can’t do much about. I can listen, I can pray, but I still have them on my mind and the weight of what they’re experiencing is felt on my shoulders.
For any of these examples, I’ll just remain in a weird spot the rest of the day, unless I stop and consider what the actual cause of my uneasiness is. If I take time to think and ask God to make it clear to me, I can deal with the emotions I’m experiencing. And I can enjoy the rest of my day.
I can silently pray for someone that’s in a rough spot. I can also pray that God would take the burden of their situation so that I don’t have to carry it all day and week. I can listen to the student who is struggling and offer support to them. Again, I can also pray that God would carry the burden of the situation so I don’t have to. It’s important to listen to your heart – Roxettte had a hit song: Listen to your heart when he's calling for you; listen to your heart, there's nothing else you can do. I don't know where you're going and I don't know why, but listen to your heart. . .
Prayer:
Dear God – Help us to take time to listen to our heart. Help us to cultivate feelings of goodness, peace and joy like the early church (Romans 14). Thank you that you carry our burdens if we merely give them over to you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
