Devotional            Day 3   MONDAY September 27H, 2010

Listen to your Heart

Proverbs 4:20-22 ~ My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.

You may not know it, but I’m a male who isn’t afraid to show my emotions. I like being real with people and I’m not afraid to be genuinely me. I have a pretty hard time when someone beats around the bush, so I try to avoid that sort of thing. I try to get to the heart of the matter because when you do, things seem to change for the better. I know it’s sometimes difficult to confront issues straight on, but I find that the issue lasts way longer if we don’t. So I’ve tried to live this way, even when I feel uncomfortable.

That said, we do open ourselves up and become quite vulnerable when we allow our emotions to be seen from time to time. I used to be ruled by my emotions – if something happened to me that really frustrated me or got me bothered, I’d hold onto those emotions for the entire day. They’d really only go away when I woke up the next morning. Unfortunately, this meant that I often would act or speak badly to people I loved, even though they had nothing to do with the situation.

Emotions have a really solid part to play in our lives. They warn us when something is wrong. They teach us to be careful and encourage us to think before acting. But emotions shouldn’t rule us.

I vaguely remember how much I liked my high school girlfriend. Looking back, it was pretty unhealthy. Don’t come asking if your relationship looks a lot like mine used to – well unless you want the truth!  I would drop everything to hang out with her. My friends started telling me, “We never hang out anymore,” and “Everything is centered around her.” I didn’t think I was excluding all of my friends, but I was. I wondered why I felt so out of control. I thought my girlfriend had a spell over me or something. But that wasn’t the case. It was just me. It was all me. I let my emotions drive.  But I needed to be in the driver seat, not my emotions. Our emotions shouldn’t rule us.

In what situations have you found that your emotions are in charge? Do YOU want to live your life or would you rather let your emotions control everything you do and say? Don’t let your emotions rule.

Prayer: Dear God – Help us to distinguish when our emotions are taking control of us. They are an important part of us, but they are not WHO we are. Grant us more wisdom and discernment on this topic and teach us Lord.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
