Devotional Day 4 MONDAY, September 20, 2010
forget what is behind you
Philippians 3:12-15 ~ Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things.
Moustache Monday. Wow – Spirit Week is here once again. I hope you were able to find the moustache of your dreams. Or maybe you’re gifted enough to have grown it from scratch. Kudos to those who are sporting a lovely strip of hair under your nose this fine Monday.
Last Friday during SLG, you spent some time thinking about your goals for this school year. Goals are super important no matter who you are or what your strengths are. It’s kind of a general principle that if you make goals for yourself and allow them to motivate you, you’ll attain greater things. I like the verse that you just heard. I think it contains some incredible wisdom about obtaining our goals. Paul writes, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. . .”
I heard a talk on this very thing and was challenged by it. I had to consider what things I hold on to that may be keeping me from moving forward. The pastor mentioned that some people, even when they’re 50 years old, blame their shortcomings or faults or struggles on the fact that their mom or dad didn’t love them when they were a kid. That’s a big deal. But he challenged the listeners: At some point, you have to move on. No matter what struggles have haunted you in the past, at some point, you have to forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.
Is there something holding you back that you have to let go? Is there a goal that you really want to reach, but it’s not letting you get there? Let go of that thing! Forgive, forget, apologize . . .do whatever it takes to drop the issue. You’ll be happy once you realize you’re now free to move on to the goal before you.
Prayer: Dear God – Thank you for your Word and how it reminds us to keep on living. You provide the strength to do so and give us counsel as to how we can live our lives better! Thanks for your wisdom!
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
