Devotional Day 2 Thursday, September 16, 2010
I Timothy 4:12 ~ Don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young. Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity.
Your coach glares down at you. “You call that a push-up?” he barks. “I want to see your chest BOUNCE. Do it again! ONE…TWO…Faster!...THREE
…FOUR…Work off that baby fat! FIVE…SIX…”
You approach your dad cautiously. All you want is to borrow a few bucks for your first razor. Admittedly, you’re a “late-bloomer.” But you’re not prepared for his response. “Stand in the light,” he says, trying to stifle a laugh. “I’ll get that whisker with the tweezers.”
Adults probably don’t mean much by these comments, but their remarks can eat at your insides for days and reinforce the myriad of anxieties and insecurities you already have. At a time when you may feel very grown up, you’re constantly belittled and reminded of your age.
Timothy was in a similar position. It’s not known how old he was when Paul told him, “Don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young,” but he was young enough that Paul elsewhere refers to him as “son.” And he was young enough to be chastised about his age – otherwise Paul wouldn’t have brought the subject up. Perhaps Timothy had somehow communicated that he felt young and inexperienced - that he’d be more effective for the Lord if he were a little older.
Whatever the situation was, Paul told him that his actions, his quality of life, and his everyday, practical godliness would speak louder than his age. In other words, he was saying Timothy’s spiritual maturity mattered more than his physical maturity.
That’s the same message God conveyed to Jeremiah when the young prophet complained of being too young to do what God had in mind for him. “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ . . . for I will be with you,” the Lord said (Jeremiah 1:7-8). And his message is the same today.
If you feel hindered by your age or limited talents, remember that these are not concerns of God’s. He can use your life in very big, extraordinary ways if you’re willing to trust him in very ordinary ways each and every day of your life. . . for he will be with you.
Prayer:
Dear God – Thank you that you love and encourage all of us equally. You give us people that we can serve no matter our age. Thank you for the opportunities you will bring into our lives today. Help us to step up and do those things you’ve told us to do, no matter what people tell us.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
