Penalty for procrastinating

It’s hard for me to believe that summer is over. Someone told me it was going to frost last night. That means that some of the plants in our garden will be done for the year. We planted our garden late this year. That’s because we didn’t have a garden last year. Our backyard was a mud pit. I was building a deck on one side of the yard and the other side got left in its natural state. It quickly became green with weeds, some as high as my fence.

This summer, I was going to change that. So a friend and I put interlocking brick in most of the yard and built some raised garden beds. Everything took a little while so we couldn’t plant our garden until late spring. Unfortunately we’re paying the penalty now – our vegetables are barely ready. Our tomatoes are huge but very hard and green and they likely won’t turn soft and red. Our cucumbers are growing well but many are still quite small, needing hot sun. Our squash are growing everywhere but are also very small.

With our garden, it’s disappointing to see all the potential but know that it won’t result in more produce. Even though there are signs that we’ll reap many vegetables, we probably won’t. Yes, the summer had some up and down weather, but facts are facts: we planted the seeds a little late.

There are many penalties for procrastinating. You put something off and a friend loses faith in you. You work on a group project but don’t do your job and you let the whole group down. You put off practicing and your section needs to stay back to work on a part. You put off doing the workout that the coach asked you to do and you sit on the bench. Or you miss that basket and your team loses the game.

Procrastination is something that you don’t want to be known for. It’s rarely a good thing. And the Bible talks about it:

Proverbs 3:27-28 ~ Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, WHEN it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"—when you now have it with you.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to take the opportunities that we have today to do what we need to do. Don’t let us put it off until tomorrow “since we don’t know what the day will bring” (Proverbs 27:1).

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
