How much longer?

Matthew 24:36-39 ~ "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

When I was a kid, time seemed to move in slow motion. On long car trips, my parents tried to quiet me by playing stupid license-plate games or seeing who could spot the next Holiday Inn billboard. But I would have none of it.

"How much longer?" I'd whine. The answer I wanted to hear was, "Soon, very soon."

I'm still time conscious, except now I have my own watch. It tells me when to get up, when to go to meetings, and when to head home. It indicates how much time is left in class and when the pastor will finish his sermon.

"How much longer?" A glance at my watch will tell me.

However, watches are useless when it comes to distant events. In determining how much longer till, say, my birthday or Christmas, I consult the calendar.

But neither a watch nor a calendar will help when it comes to determining how much longer till the most momentous event to occur since Jesus visited earth: his second coming. The Bible stresses repeatedly that Christ will return. But you're wasting time if you check a watch or calendar. The Bible just says to be ready.

On our family car trips, we often left in the middle of the night. So when I went to bed, I slept in my clothes. I didn't want to fumble around in my PJ’s for a half hour. I wanted to be ready.

That same level of preparedness also ought to mark our attitude toward Christ's long-heralded second coming. We ought to live in anticipation that it could happen tomorrow. Or, for that matter, today. Our hearts should be ready, our lives in order.

"How much longer?" If Christ were to answer that question, I like to think he'd respond, "Soon, my child, very soon."

Prayer:

Dear God – Thank you for your promise that you will return and take us to live with you. Help us not to forget this and live with you in mind today.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
