Shifting Sand

Matthew 7:24-27 ~ "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

When the O'Malleys bought their dream home on the sands of Long Island's Westhaptom Beach, there was a sprawling dune and glistening beach separating them from the Atlantic. But gale-force winds kicked up the surf, and before long they were looking down the barrel of nature's gun.

They lost the dune their first winter, and the beach disappeared beneath their feet soon after. Two years later their roof and top floor were blown away. Rebuilding was a joke. Before long, the steps were gone, the homes on both sides of them toppled, and water lapped at their foundation. It was just a matter of time before their home was reduced to driftwood.

Like the O'Malleys, the Alfords bought a sea view home. Theirs was atop a 160-foot sandy cliff in Bolinas, California, and on a clear day could see San Francisco. But when storms brewed, the churning water carved out great chunks of the earth. One day there was a deep-rooted tree in their backyard: the next day it was gone, along with a fifteen-foot slice of their yard. Soon there was nothing but air between their deck and the raging surf below.

Foolish as it is to build on sand, it must be dreadful to watch your property be destroyed. That's what Jesus was getting at in the verses above, except that he wasn't talking about real estate.

He was talking about those for whom the Word of God merely goes in one ear and out the other: those who go to church often enough to be considered religious, but nothing they heard ever really soaks in. Before long, their lives are eroded and splintered by the concerns of the world.

If you find yourself in that category today, you need to start - I mean really start - taking your Christianity seriously. You need to get solid rock beneath you, and fast. The water is rising.

Prayer:

Dear God – Whether our life is eroding and splintered or growing and green, help us to start taking our Christianity seriously. Be the solid rock that we need to stand strong today.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
