Devotional                           Day 3, Monday, May 31st, 2010

A Pat on the Back

We’ve talked several times about being kind to others around us this year. How has the year gone for you?  Have you taken time to help somebody out who needed it?  Does a memory come to mind?  Think about it. . . . [PAUSE]

  1. [PAUSE]    Way to go! Thank you! You contributed to making MBCI awesome this year.

If you didn’t get a pat on the back, I guess you don’t think past your own needs. I mean, YOU are the one that decided whether you deserved one or not, right?

I think our tendency is to be self-centered. However, all of us do actually show kindness for other people from time to time. The question is – can you recognize that you’ve done this?

Discussion:

1. Have you had a chance to be kind and self-sacrificing this week?

2. Are there moments that come to mind when you should have allowed the needs of others to come before your own?

3. How can we make this a regular habit in our lives?

After all:

Your own soul is nourished when you are kind ~ Proverbs 11:17

The words of the godly lead to life ~ Proverbs 10:11

Gentle words bring life and health ~ Proverbs 15:4

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart ~ Proverbs 15:30

Kind words are like honey - sweet to the soul and healthy for the body ~     Proverbs 16:24

We want life; we want our souls to be fulfilled.  I think a lot of happiness and satisfaction can come from simply being kind to others and putting their needs and desires before our own.  Why don’t you fill in the blank in the following prayer . . .

Prayer:

Dear God – There was that moment this week when I could have been more kind [think of it]. Help me to see those moments when I’m actually in them. I know there will be more opportunities – thank you for them.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
