Devotional                           Day 4, Friday, May 21st, 2010

There Will Be a Day

There will be a day when you will look back on your time in high school. You might be back at MBCI for a 10 year reunion. It’s an interesting thing – coming back to high school and meeting up with all your old friends and classmates.

I was able to take part in this very thing and it was . . . interesting. Lots of the same things were happening that occurred 10 years earlier in high school. One example: No one wanted to say they were going, unless other people said they were going. I was waiting and waiting to say “Yes” to coming, but none of my friends were signing up. Eventually I had to contact some old friends and see if they were going. I said, “You’ll go if I go, right? . . . . Okay, well then I’m going. . . .  So you’re for sure going to come now right? Cuz I just confirmed and said I was going. . .”

Walking into the room where my old classmates were gathering was a trip back in time. The gang was all there. But it was different. We had matured. Life had been lived. There were kids, husbands, wives, balding heads, new looks and more. It was kind of weird at first. But I was happy I went.

Now it helped that I don’t have many regrets from high school. I tended not to say rude things and usually listened to my teachers. I tried hard and I had good friends. I walked away from insults and chose not to fight (Middle School was another story). I tried hard to be pure and to show the ladies respect. I tried not to take advantage of anyone, especially my girlfriend (you know what I mean people).

Like Mrs. Boersma talked about at chapel recently – do you want to remember the drama-filled days of school or do you want to remember the good times, the amazing memories?  You can choose!

Make good memories now – you don’t want to be the one walking into your reunion sheepishly as you see faces that make you uncomfortable. There’s the girl you were mean to, the guy who’s girlfriend you stole, the boy you fooled around with, the girl whose parents still don’t like you because of what you did.

Prov. 24:21 ~ Fear the LORD and the king. . . and do not join with the rebellious.

Don’t be the rebel. Choose to do something meaningful with your life.

Prayer:

Dear God – This topic is a challenging one for all of us. We are rebellious at times and we all have some regrets. Challenge us to make good memories, to escape the humdrum drama of our lives. Help us to think about the big picture and the amazing things we can do here at school.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
