Devotional Day 3, Thursday, May 20th, 2010
Let’s Start a Rebellion
You know, I just don’t get it. Can someone help me understand? In the hallways, when you tell me “nice haircut,” do you mean it? Or are you joking? Just a moment ago, I replied, “Thank you!” to a similar comment. But I had to stop and think, “Was he being sarcastic?”
I may never know for sure.
There’s something else I don’t get. And it bothers me a little at the moment. Stubbornness. Why do we rebel? Why do we as humans go against the very thing we’ve been told. Let’s admit it; we have rebellious spirits. I think it’s in our DNA to be stubborn and a little rebellious. When we’ve been told NOT to do something, we still do it.
Rebellion rears its ugly head in many places. Maybe you’ve violated the dress code: You know the rules, yet you still wear shorts that just cover. . . well, you know. Then there’s class behavior – maybe you talk in class, disrupt what your teacher is trying to teach and annoy people around you. Or maybe you’re the quiet one – your parents think you’re an angel. But any chance you get to cause trouble without anyone noticing, you cause chaos. I had a friend like that; he would play the Jarkko Ruutu role on the hockey team (Agitator).
There’s only one way that we should be rebellious. That is turning our back to the world and facing Jesus Christ as we live our lives. You’re in the world, you live here. But you don’t have to take part in every part of it. Think about the big picture once in a while. Make decisions that mean something, take moments to live a life that you’re proud of.
If you feel I’ve singled you out, come see me. I am not thinking of anyone specifically as I write this, but if you’re face is getting a little warm right now, it might mean you have some things to think about and some changes to make. Don’t ignore it; come talk to me about it.
I Corinthians 7:31b ~ For this world as we know it will soon pass away.
Prayer:
Dear God – Forgive us for embracing sin in making choices to rebel. Help us to be concerned about our reputation as Christians or even people going to a Christian school. Help us to care and show some respect for You God, and for other classmates around us. Lead us into your rebellion, one of righteousness and peace.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
