Devotional                           Day 3, Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Have too much?

Deut 24:21 ~ When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don’t glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows.

I’m reminded of this notion of giving away the excess produce when I think of strawberry picking with my mom when I was younger. We would drive out to Portage La Prairie because they had the best strawberries EVER. Though, I think the first year we went there, they were amazing, but I don’t remember them ever being that good again.  But that’s not the point.

Some years, we’d get to be the first people picking through the row. And picking strawberries in a “fresh” row was always awesome. There were tons of berries and you never had to pick the tiny little ones or the unripe ones. You could just move from one plump, juicy strawberry to the next.

However, most years, you wouldn’t always get to be the first person to pick through the bushes. Often we’d arrive and have to pick through bushes that had already been picked. This was harder work and therefore, they sold you the pails for a lesser price. I guess they knew there wasn’t much left in there worth picking.

I’m curious how many farmers pick through their bushes once, and then put up a huge sign – IF YOU’RE AN ORPHAN, A WIDOW, OR A NEW IMMIGRANT, COME PICK SOME STRAWBERRIES FOR FREE!  I think it’d be tough to screen people. Too many of us like to get FREE stuff and might try to pretend we’re orphans or widowed or new to Canada.

But think about it - how amazing would it be to have fresh strawberries when you can barely afford to eat!

We’ve talked about our excess over the past 3 days. Consider these questions in smaller groups:

Have you seriously considered if you have excess?

What are you going to do about it? Someone could use your extra as early as   TODAY.

            Will you act?  How?

Prayer:  Dear God – This week, we’ve been reminded that we are rich. We have more than most people in the world. It’s really North America and Europe where people own cars, have homes to sleep in, beds to sleep on, running water, clean water to drink. Lord, help us to remember what we have, be grateful for it, and consider helping others with our excess.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
