Devotional Day 1, Monday, May 10th, 2010
Have too much?
I’ve recently been challenged to consider my excess. By excess, I mean the stuff that I own that I don’t really use and could probably do without. By excess, I mean the money that I try to make on items that I don’t want anymore. Has this happened to you? You’re with a friend and you tell them that you’re tired of this one hoodie you’ve worn for awhile.
They say, “I’ll take it!” In an instant, your mind goes to money and you say, “You can have it for $20!”
Why do we think about money so much? I want to think about it less. I want to really come to understand that I can afford what I need for my family. I can make ends meet. I don’t need more money to make things work or even be happy.
This week, it all started with a Nooma video I hadn’t seen before. It’s a newer one that talks about caring for orphans, widows and immigrants. Through SOAR, I had gotten to know organizations and even people who fit into these categories. Actual places and faces came to mind. Maybe some come to your mind as well. Then the video went on to explain this command found in the book of Deuteronomy:
Deut 24:17-19 ~ 17 “True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt. 18 Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command.
19 “When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all you do.
You see, the farmers had enough to take care of their needs when they went over their crops for the first time. Sure, they’d make more money if they went back over the fields and were thorough in cleaning up the grain. But God wants us to know that we’ll be okay without our excess. In fact, we may not even notice it missing. Our excess can help someone eat that wouldn’t be able to. Our excess can help someone survive and even get back on their feet while it may mean nothing to us.
We all need a “step-up” from time to time – can we allow our excess to be that boost for someone today?
Prayer: Dear God – Help us to see the real needs around us. Help us to recognize that our extra might be exactly what the next person needs to get their feet back under them. Help us to notice opportunities and then give away our excess.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
