Still Stuck in the Stroller?

“Mom!” Erin howled. “You said that I could pick my own clothes!”

“I’m not just going to watch you empty my purse, silly,” Erin’s mom tried to joke. But Erin didn’t think it was funny when her mom tagged along at the mall and trailed her in and out of every shop. Mom couldn’t just walk in and whip out the checkbook. She had to help pick everything. Worse yet, Mom wouldn’t dream of leaving Erin’s dad and brother and sister at home. Erin’s shopping trip had turned into family night at the mall.

For a while, Erin’s family didn’t notice her walking faster and faster, always at least twenty steps in from of them. No one, that is, until Erin’s brother gave her away. “{Whey won’t she walk with us?” he whined.

“Worm,” Erin thought. She’d get him later.

“What’s wrong?” her dad bellowed. “Don’t you want to be seen with us?”

In the beginning are Dad and Mom. They bring a baby home from the hospital, maybe from a foster home. It’s cute – love, marriage, baby. But families are more than cute. There’s no better place to teach a drooly new human how to grow up than in a family no matter what yours looks like.

Deep down inside you probably love your family. Some days you even like them. But growing up means you’re in the process of leaving them.

That’s where the problem starts. It’s part of the God’s plan for you to have family to guide you. But it’s also part of God’s plan for you to grow up, hang on to him and follow him for yourself. Your family has been there for care for you. But you’re learning to care for yourself.

You’re caught in the middle – you still depend on your family, but your family isn’t always around. Already you have to fend for yourself with friends, strangers, school and more. You’re not a baby anymore.

But your family isn’t always so sure. And unless you want them to treat you like you’re still stuck in a stroller, you need to figure out how to get along at home – and on your own.

Proverbs 6:20-22 ~ My child, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. Keep their words always in your heart. . . When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you. For their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life.
