Can Anyone Tame the Tongue?

Human beings have gotten pretty good at harnessing nature and overcoming it.  We can steer huge ships with the tiniest rudder. We can windsurf and sail quite successfully in the most turbulent of waters. We can train rattlesnakes so they make good house pets. Circus trainers tame the biggest elephants, the largest lions and even grizzly bears. Little kids ride giant horses at summer camps and most people don’t think twice about it.

Training animals takes a lot of patience. Trainers spend years trying to communicate to animals so that they can perform tricks or even regular, normal human activities. But we’ve probably all heard at least one story about animals still acting out their instincts and hurting their trainers.

My aunt and uncle live in the country. In their acreage, you’ll likely see goats, sheep, cows, chickens, sometimes a pig, and for sure, horses. My cousins, all under 14 years old are avid horse riders. They are all excellent with animals and have won equestrian competitions. However, in the last month, my oldest cousin was kicked in the head by one of her horses.  Does the horse know her well? Absolutely. Does the horse trust her? For sure. But you can’t take the horse out of the horse. It will still act on instinct and kick when it feels angry or threatened. It doesn’t care if you get hurt in the process.

After so many years of the human race seeking to train animals, animals are still animals and will act as such. When we met for Bible study this week, we read in James about the human tongue. I think our tongue is like these animals. As much as we think that we’ve trained the tongue, we still haven’t completely. The Bible says that “no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! James 3:7-9

Prayer:  Dear God – We understand we can’t tame our tongues on our own. You give us the reminders to think before we speak. Help us to build habits of listening to you and speaking deliberately. Help us control our tongues God.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
