Overcome Evil with Good
Romans 12:21 ~ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Not a lot of press coverage was given to Argentinean professional golfer Roberto De Vincenzo, except for his grave misfortune in the 1968 Masters (check out his wiki online if you’re a golfer – it’s a crazy story). However, the following story shows his character as a person:
After winning a tournament, De Vincenzo received his cheque on the 18th green, flashed a smile for the camera, and then walked alone to the clubhouse. As he went to his car, he was approached by a sad-eyed young woman who said to him, “It’s a good day for you, but I have a baby with an incurable disease. It’s of the blood and the doctors say she will die.” De Vincenzo paused and then asked, “May I help your little girl?” He then took out a pen, endorsed his winning cheque and then pressed it into her hand. “Make some good days for the baby,” he said.
A week later as he was having lunch at a country club, a PGA official approached him, saying, “Some of the boys in the parking lot told me you met a young woman after you won the tournament last week.” De Vincenzo nodded. The official said, “Well, she’s a phony. She has no sick baby. She fleeced you my friend.”
The golfer looked up and asked, “You mean that there is no baby who is dying without hope?” This time the PGA official nodded. De Vincenzo grinned and said, “That’s the best news I’ve heard all week.”
There seems to be no lack of evil in the world. De Vincenzo realized that he couldn’t control that. But he knew that he could control his reactions to evil. He chose to not get flustered about it or get angry. We will be tempted to respond with revenge -- to strike back at those who hurt us. But that’s not a good idea. It will only lead to more pain and misery for others and us. The answer is love, God’s divine love.
When we return good for evil, we break the cycle and the power of evil to affect us.
“Love is stronger than hate. Good is more powerful than evil. You can walk in victory no matter what anyone does to you.”1
Hebrews 13:6 ~ So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
Prayer: Dear God – Help us to react with love and not hate. Help us to break the cycle of retaliation and revenge and bless each other here at MBCI. With your help, we can do this.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
