Devotional                           Day 5, Wednesday,  April 28th, 2010

The First Missionary

"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him." I Corinthians 1:27-29

Who was the first missionary that Jesus ever sent out? Was it Peter? Nope. John? No. Paul? That’s a negative. The twelve disciples? Keep on guessing… Okay, I'll give you a hint; The first individual that he ever commissioned to tell the good news was from the region of the Gerasenes. Do you give up?

Believe it or not, this man lived in a cemetery, where he took up residence inside a tomb. He had snapped handcuffs and broken shackles dangling from his feet. All day long and through the night, he would wander naked among the tombs and in the wild hills, screaming and cutting himself with sharp pieces of stone. Yikes! He had a legion, a total of 6,000 demons inside of him.

You may know how the story reads; The demons were no match for Jesus and were eventually cast into a herd of 2,000 pigs that rushed down a steep bank into the lake and were drowned. If you recall, this man known as Legion, had an instant transformation take place in his life. The lunatic was now sitting there, fully clothed and in his right mind. Everyone was shocked. When it came time for Jesus to leave;

“the man who had been possessed by the demons, begged Jesus to let him go along. But Jesus said no. ‘Go home to your friends,’ he told him, ‘and tell them what wonderful things God has done for you; and how merciful he has been.’ So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to tell everyone about the great things Jesus had done for him; and they were awestruck by his story. (Mark 5:19-20 LIV).

So next time you feel that you’re not good enough, remember that God deliberately chooses the things of little worth in the world in order to shame the wise and great. So don’t worry about your past. Once you have been forgiven of your sins, realize that your testimony can become one of your greatest assets. If Christ chose Legion as his first missionary, then he can and will use you. You just gotta let him. Let go--let God.

  1. Prayer:  Dear God – Forgive me of all of my shortcomings. I thank You that You can bring me out of the darkness and into the light, if I only ask. We need you. Help us to surrender to your authority and will in our lives. Take us to places that we’ve never dreamed of.                         I                                                                                                    In Jesus’ Name, Amen
