Devotional Day 4, Tuesday, April 27th, 2010
Refurbished Heart
"But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." I John 1:7-9
I recently went to an auto auction with my wife to buy her first car. It was a crazy experience! You would think that as a dancehall deejay, I would be able to keep up, but those auctioneers are fast! We ended up getting a ‘93 Saturn for the lowest bid of the day! However, the very next day, I put the key in the ignition and it wouldn’t start. Thankfully, a kind friend offered to fix it for us. When I went into the automotive parts store to get the part, I was given a choice; purchase a brand new starter or, buy a refurbished one for much less. I chose the latter for it was at least $100 cheaper and I knew that it would work just fine.
Refurbished basically means that they took a broken used part and restored it to its proper working condition. It is like new, but with a questionable history. Thousands of years ago the Lord invented the art of refurbishing. He took a sinful human with a dubious past, did some serious remodeling inside and gave him a clean record.
God is in the restoration business. If He were into fashion, then He’d be shopping at Goodwill. If he were a mechanic, He would be buying salvaged titles from junkyards. For the Lord loves to fix things up and give them a second chance. With this skill, He has chosen to clean up dirty and sinful humans. Sure He knows that our track record is horrible, but despite our shortcomings, God consistently uses sinful people to relay His message of redemption. He is in the business of forgiveness and is not afraid to use even the most despicable of persons to fulfill His mission.
Let’s face it; all of us are born into sin (Psalm 51:5). We have all blown it and have a multitude of weaknesses (Romans 3:23). “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). We can only receive this gift and be forgiven of our sins if we acknowledge our sinfulness, confess and repent of our sins (I John 1:9). After we have done this, God can and will use us in tremendous ways.
Prayer: Dear God – Regardless of our history, (and often times, because of our history), You choose to use us to do mighty things. Some pastors used to be gun-slinging gang members, so we know that no matter what our past looks like—we can ask You to use us.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
