Achilles Heel

We all stumble in many ways." James 3:2a

Who is your favorite superhero? Perhaps it’s Superman, Batman, Cat Woman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, The 6 Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, or even one of the X-Men or the Fantastic Four. While these crime fighters are hailed for their amazing abilities, each one of these icons also has at least one significant weakness. Whether it is Superman’s allergy to Kryptonite or the Hulks incredible inability to control his anger, each struggles with his own Achilles Heel.

The larger than life superheroes of today are our pop culture icons. We are fascinated by the lives of star athletes, pop stars, royalty and famous actors. Paparazzi’s will hover like vultures around a coffee shop with an actress inside for one unflattering shot. We exalt them, only to knock them down. We inflate them until they are larger than life, only to burst their bubble for the whole world to see.

Why do we do this? Because it makes us feel better about ourselves. “If I can’t have a successful marriage,” some think, “Then neither should Jen and Brad.” We love to see them fall. We are entertained by scandal. Did you know that the phrase “stumbling block” in the New Testament comes from the Greek word “skandalon”? The definition for this Greek word literally means “a bent sapling that is formed into a trap-stick”. It’s basically a snare used to catch another in sin or displeasure. We do this all the time. We hope for the worst or even attempt to orchestrate the fall of another.

However, in Romans 14:13, Paul wrote, “Stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way.” And if we are called not to cause someone else to stumble, (I Cor 10:32), then it is fair to say that we probably should not be rejoicing in their failings.

Yet one look at the host of magazines in the supermarket checkout aisle and you will realize that we love scandal. It is our nation’s guilty pleasure. These tabloids magnify someone else’s weaknesses, making us feel a little better about our humdrum lives. But few realize that when we revel in another’s misfortune, we are simply rearing the ugly head of our own sinful nature. Sin is our Achilles Heel. We are revealing a chink in our own armor that we should never get comfortable with.

Imagine what it would be like if the Lord rejoiced in our wrongs. Picture how miserable life would be if He was entertained by our misgivings. Thankfully He’s not. He hates sin but loves the sinner. And best of all, He is in the business of forgiveness and is not afraid to use broken vessels to relay His perfect message. So stop being entertained by the shortcomings of others. Pray for them. Ask forgiveness for your own blood-thirsty desire to see others fall. Wish the best for someone for a change. Repent of your own transgressions and ask God to use you in spite of them. He will.

Prayer:  Dear God – Forgive me for mistaking sin for entertainment. Help me to see others as You see them. Remind me to pray for those that are falling--not rejoice in their failings. Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner. Thank You for revealing my shortcomings through Your Word. Please forgive me of my sins and cleanse me of my unrighteousness.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
