Who Is That?
Matthew 21:8-10 ~ Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!” The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked.
I was at New York’s Kennedy airport one evening when a crowd of people swarmed the gate of an approaching 747. Most had their cameras aimed at the door and were bouncing nervously on their feet.
Suddenly, a popular rock musician stepped through the door. Pandemonium broke loose. Flashes exploded. Kids elbowed closer. And everyone battled for autographs.
I was standing near an elderly lady, who had stopped out of curiosity. She wore a puzzled look and tapped me on the shoulder. “Excuse me,” she said, “but who is that?”
A similar thing happened when Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, just five days before his death. A huge crowd had gathered, ensuring that his arrival into the grand capital city would never be forgotten. There was much commotion and shouting among those who knew about Jesus, about his miracles and claims. The fuss was so great, Matthew wrote, that the whole city was stirred into frenzy. Yet there were many, he noted, who scratched their heads and asked those standing nearby, “Pardon me, but who’s the guy on the donkey?”
They were puzzled about Jesus of Nazareth. Could he possibly be the one and only Son of God as he claimed? Had God actually stepped out of the shadows, so to speak, and shown his face? The Old Testament forecast it. And everyone knew if you read it there, it had to be true. But still, how could it be? It didn’t make sense that the homeless, jobless son of two hick Jews could be who he claimed to be.
C.S. Lewis wrote on this matter: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said wouldn’t be a great moral teacher. He’d either be a lunatic – on a level with a man who says he’s a poached egg – or else he’d be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.”
Questions about Christ’s identity haven’t changed much in two thousand years. Either he was a full-tilt crazy with the asylum key, or he carried the key to unlock the entire universe. The choice is yours: Kook of kooks or King of kings.
Prayer: Dear God – You sent your Son and made it pretty clear that the prophecies of old were coming true. What a spectacle to be in Jerusalem for this procession! The Son of God was being led like a lamb to the slaughter, though he did no wrong, he became a ransom for us. Wow. Thank you God, for our redemption through Jesus.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
