Holding Out
I Corinthians 5:7 ~ We live by believing and not by seeing.
True baseball fans old enough to remember will never forget the 1994 season. It was the year players went on strike. TV sets were quiet. There was no World Series. Stadiums were as still as a small-town street after midnight. Season tickets had all been sold, but games were canceled because the players were holding out. They wanted more money, more benefits, more guarantees.
When it comes to holding out on God, most of us are pros. We want to play by our own rules, come what may. Back in high school, when I first sensed a need for God, I did a lot of bargaining. It was June, during the three-month summer break. I more or less told God I wanted to wait until September to become a Christian. Summers were too much fun to be wrecked by going to church, reading the Bible, and worrying about things like drinking and going to the wrong parties.
Trouble is, God waited. And I had my most miserable summer ever.
People hold out on God in other, different ways. They want guarantees. They’ll do what God wants, if . . .
You know, if God gets them the job they want, if God heals their mom’s cancer, if God allows them to fall in love, if God gets them accepted to the right college, if God lets them be a cheerleader or baseball team all-star. The list is a mile long.
But we’ve got it all wrong. God doesn’t promise us fail-safe, risk-free Christianity. He doesn’t assure us things will work out like in the movies, with everyone living happily ever after. He doesn’t guarantee us immunity from hurt and hardship. There are no guarantees other than the fact that he’ll be our God if we’ll be his people.
We want promises, but God wants faith. Sure, there are risks. But faith takes the risks, without knowing where it is being led. That’s because faith loves and follows – no strings attached – the One who leads: Jesus Christ.
You can think of it as taking a trip without maps. Or you can think of it as a true and absolute adventure. Quit holding out. Became a risk-taker for God today.
Prayer:
Dear God – Thanks for the many promises we read in the Bible and stories that we hear, about how you will never leave us – you’ll always be our God and stay near us. Thank you for that. Keep reminding us that you want us as your people; you want us as part of your family.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
