The Sixth Man

Flight 90 began like any other flight: the flight attendant saying something about the location of exits, the dash down the runway, the gentle lurch skyward. Sitting quietly in the rear, a balding man in his fifties rolled his extravagant mustache and stared out the 737’s window at the blast of winter. The heavy snowfall obscured vision of the frozen Washington, D.C., landscape below.

Suddenly, tragedy struck. The Florida-bound plane with seventy-four passengers skidded across a traffic-clogged bridge. Cars were sheared in half. Then the jet quickly sank beneath the ice-clogged Potomac River.

When a rescue helicopter arrived, only six passengers were visible. As they floundered in the icy water, losing their grip on life, the helicopter dangled a life preserver to the man with the mustache. But each time the ring was lowered, the man passed it to someone else, who was then shuttled safely to shore. He waved the ring off five times. When the helicopter finally returned for him, the man had disappeared to his death …anonymously and selflessly, known only as “the sixth man.”

A hero? Yes. In his last minutes of life he faced death with charity and gave his life so others might live.

I sometimes wonder if I would have done the same. Probably not. And then I think, Is there anyone I’d die for, really, if the choice were set before me? My siblings? We’ve never really been too close. My best friend? Too flippant.

In the end, I’d want to be absolutely sure the person I swapped my life for was worth it – I might consider giving up my life if the individual was some kind of cross between Einstein and Billy Graham, but even then . . .

Compared to the Bible’s standards, my love and selflessness are pretty pathetic. And then I stop and think about how Christ gave his life for me. By my standards I wouldn’t be worth dying for. But by God’s standards, everyone is worth dying for.

Romans 5:7-8, 10-11 ~ We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. . . If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we're at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life! Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah! (The Message)

Prayer: Dear God – Despite our sin, you put us on friendly terms with yourself through Jesus’ death on the cross. His sacrifice cleared our debts and allowed us to walk in the same LIFE that raised Christ from the grave! Praise to God through Jesus, the Messiah!

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
