Devotional                                        Day 3, Wednesday, Mar 24th, 2010

Most Important

I Corinthians 15:3-4 ~ I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.

The Bible is the product of various writers conveying important truths about God, man, life, and the afterlife over several thousand years. Each of the writers had a different message to convey.

Moses brought us the Ten Commandments – an official rule book of morality. King David delivered the Psalms – an intimate songbook that mirrors God’s personal relationship with man. King Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes – a despairing look at the meaninglessness of life apart from God. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John penned the Gospels – dramatic narrations of Jesus’ life on earth. The apostle Paul gave us much of the New Testament – summaries of the Christian faith for the new church.

In view of the sheer bulk of the Bible, have you ever asked yourself what it all comes down to? What is God really trying to communicate anyway? Can his agenda be condensed to a single verse? Genesis 1:1, maybe? “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Or perhaps Romans 3:23 ~ For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. The final showdown between God and Satan? What is most important?

That was something Paul wrestled with in his letter to the young church at Corinth. What do you tell a group of believers who are struggling to make sense of God amid all the immorality and materialism around them? Paul’s response: “I passed on to you what was most important. . . . Christ died for our sins.”

There you have it: most important. In all God’s dealings with man, from Genesis onward, nothing matters more than the Cross. Why? Because the very Son of the very Creator of the universe hung there. Nowhere else did God so vividly display his love. Nowhere else did he put it all on the line.

The Cross. It was where love mastered evil, where time intersected eternity, where God bridged heaven and earth. The Cross. The closer we live to it, the more we truly live.

Prayer:

Dear God – Like this writer says, “nowhere else did God so vividly display his love” for us, than when he sacrificed Jesus on the cross. It was the only thing that would cover our sins and allow us to have a relationship again with You, our Creator God. Thank you for doing the act that allows us to be called your children. Thank you for the amazing life we can live knowing Jesus as a friend and a father.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
