Learn Good Habits Now

Psalm 34:11:14 ~ Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord. Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

Yesterday, I kind of let you in on my fascination with the TLC show Hoarders. I sometimes wonder why I’m so fascinated by it. I think one of the reasons is because some of my family members say I’m a pack rat. I’m not as bad as my Dad or even my Grandpa, but I show signs of being one from time to time.

You see, I save things. If it could be useful for something, I often keep it. The trouble is, when I need it, I may or may not be able to remember where I put it.  Without knowing what I might use it for, it’s difficult to know where to store it. I’m starting to actually donate some of those items, knowing that if I really need it, I can go out and buy it. I’m talking about screws, nails, little around-the-house-fix-it items.  Another reason for my holding onto things is that I’m a dabbler. I like tons of things. I like motors, I like sports. I like music and food. I like electronics and computers. I like technology and mowing my lawn. I like working on my house and building things.  This unfortunately means that I use a lot of different things and need a lot of random things in order to participate in all of my passions. I guess I’m a Jack-of-all-trades, but an expert of none.

But hoarding isn’t just saving things for a later time. Each person interviewed on the TLC show has been through a traumatic experience at one time and hasn’t been able to deal with it, for a variety of reasons. Perhaps a spouse or family member passed away, perhaps someone had a bad car accident, or perhaps there was a divorce.

Stuff happens to us. Life happens. And we need to learn how to deal with life. Life doesn’t have to rule you. You can experience a full life if you learn how to react to your circumstances now when you’re young. Most of us know that being angry usually only hurts us and those we love. Most of us know that being bitter and not forgiving someone only hurts us and those we love. We know that using revenge only hurts us and those that we love. In the end, we have to control our emotions and how we react if we’re going to really LIVE life.

Prayer:

Dear God – You are the giver of life. We are dead without the life that you give to us. Help us to turn from evil, do good, control our tongues, and search for peace with everyone.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
