Hoarding: Buried Alive

Wow – have you seen this show? It’s surprising that people can accumulate so much stuff. Obviously TLC, the host channel, seeks out the most extreme cases where people might not remain alive if they continue living as they are. Often their water has been shut off because they are not paying their bills, the electricity isn’t working because they haven’t paid that bill either and they are running the risk of literally being buried alive.

Whether your own house is just like the show or it’s sparkling and tidy, I feel that we can learn something from it.  I find that after watching the show, I go about my house, purging it of all things that haven’t been used in a while.  Somehow it puts into perspective what’s important and what isn’t. For items I really don’t use or need, it helps me make decisions in an instant – I realize I can be okay without it.  And it goes into a bag destined for the nearest thrift store.

It’s funny how seeing something extreme is just what I need – to understand that I’ve got MORE than I need.  I have clothes to put on in the morning, a house to live in, and a job to pay the bills. Do I need much else?  Friends and family of course. But belongings?  Things to put in my house?  Yeah, I don’t need much.  I really don’t.  In order to survive, I have MORE than enough.

Whether you feel you have enough or not enough, Jesus offers everything you’ll ever need. If you haven’t extended your hand to Jesus, think about doing it. There’s a favorite song of mine that talks about Jesus being more than enough:

All of you is more than enough for all of me, for every hurt and every need. You satisfy me with your love and all I have in you, is more than enough.

Psalm 37: 16-19 ~ It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich. For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the Lord takes care of the godly. Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever. They will not be disgraced in hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough.

Prayer:

Dear God – Your Word says that you have our needs taken care of. You take care of the birds and how much more do you love us, humans created in your very image.  Help us to reach out to you and see if you are in fact more than enough. I know you won’t let us down.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
