Almost But Not Quite

Mark 12:34 ~ You are not far from the Kingdom of God.

Almost. It’s a sad-sounding, six-letter word that implies a fumbled opportunity, near-miss effort, fizzled dream, close-call decision, botched attempt, missed chance. The word means “nearly,” “just about,” “not quite.”

Almost is the pop fly that would have been caught had the sun not flashed in your eyes, the exam that would have been passed had you taken more time to study, the relationship that would have been salvaged had you not lost your temper, the appointment that would have been kept had you not run out of gas.

Almost is the fish that got away, the race lost on a technicality, the election defeat by a single vote.

Almost is the near-win attempt, the second-place finish, the runner-up effort, the foul tip, the misfire.

Almost is the rich young man who’d kept all the commandments since he was a little boy (Mark 10:17-22). But by refusing to sell his possessions and follow Jesus, he made it clear that he was unwilling to put Christ first in his life.

Almost is the teacher of the law whose questions of Jesus indicated he was “not far from the Kingdom of God” (Mark 12:28-34). But “not far” is not quite good enough. God wants us to come all the way to faith in him.

We are not told the outcome of this teacher’s encounter with Jesus, whether he ever came to trust in Jesus Christ. But perhaps the Gospel writer left it uncertain so that we would ask ourselves the question, “Have I entered the Kingdom of God?”

Prayer:

Dear God – Your Word says to confess our sins to you and believe you raised Jesus from the dead, and we’ll be saved. You extend friendship to us though we don’t deserve to be close to you, us being sinful and you being perfect. Thank you for your interest in us and our lives.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
