Name Calling
Hebrews 4:7 ~ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.
Moving through the crowded hall, your mind is already on the weekend. Oblivious to oncoming traffic, you’re thinking about Saturday night even though you’re smack in the middle of another ordinary week.
Suddenly you hear your name. Your brain whirs back to the present. You stop, turn, and expectantly scan the nearby faces. And then you spot a good friend beckoning from across the hallway and feel a smile starting to spread.
It’s a simple pleasure, hearing your name called out in a crowd. It creates a sense of expectancy, of anticipation. Suddenly, you’re not just another anonymous face. You have been noticed.
Zacchaeus probably felt that way the day Jesus passed through Jericho. A nearly anonymous man whose name is mentioned just once in the New Testament (see Luke 19:1-10), he was, in blunt terms, a crook – a legman for the Roman IRS, who, if living today, would wear his shirt open to his navel and have three pounds of gold chains dangling from his neck. In addition to being a shyster, Zacchaeus was vertically challenged – something of a legal dwarf. So when they crowd began milling around Jesus, Zacchaeus shinnied up a tree for a better view.
That’s when he got the surprise of his life. Through the roar of the crowd, he suddenly heard his name being called. When he turned around in the branches and saw it was Jesus beckoning him, Zacchaeus probably fell out of the tree in astonishment.
It’s a wonder he didn’t suffer a coronary, too, because in the next breath Jesus said, “I must be a guest in your home today!”
What could he make of it? What can anybody make of it other than, for reasons known only to him, God seems to have similar plans for every last peculiar one of us. “I must visit with you!”
The only hitch is that you must first turn an ear toward heaven and, above the drone of the humdrum, listen for him calling your name.
Prayer:
Dear God – You know all of us by name and you know our hearts too. You know our thoughts, our fears, our sins, our hurts – you know every part of us. What a great friend you can be to those that choose to follow you. Oh that we’d only turn our ear toward you and hear you speaking.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
