Spontaneous Praise
To think you find God only in church is as absurd as thinking you can find art only in a gallery. Bricks and mortar can’t hold him. He isn’t confined to a building any more than drama is to the stage, music to the radio, or monkeys to the zoo.
Open your eyes and there he is! Right outside your bedroom window. You catch glimpses of heaven in the flower petals, a child’s smile, the light of the sun, a puddle reflection, or a lover’s embrace.
Paul writes, “By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being” (Romans 1:20). His point: You don’t need a church pew to experience God.
“If you have never heard the mountains singing, or seen the trees of the field clapping their hands, do not think because of that they don’t,” wrote McCandlish Phillips. “Ask God to open your ears so you may hear it, and your eyes so you may see it, because, though few men ever know it, they do, my friend, they do.”
Spontaneous worship can erupt any time, any place . . . as it did one bright summer day to a young East Coast musician. Walking along the Mohawk Trail in the Berkshire Mountains, he climbed a tower overlooking Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. The soft-edged mist of morning had burned off, and the sun cut a golden swath across the sky. Spread before him from horizon to horizon were sparkling lakes, tall trees, and the scent of little things growing.
He was so awestruck that he rushed down to his car, grabbed his cornet, and climbed back into the tower. Suddenly he began playing the instrument with all his heart – for his own pleasure, for the enjoyment of passing hikers, and for the glory of God. He’d heard the mountains singing and wanted to join in accompaniment.
Prayer:
Dear God – As we see a starry sky, hear a clap of thunder, hold a baby – help us to remember that all of creation illustrates the work of your creative hands. Thank you that any of us can turn toward you and grow in friendship with you at anytime, anywhere, if we would just repent and believe.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
