Devotional Day 2, Friday, March 5th, 2010
Rat on a Scooter XL
Okay. Let’s be honest. Many of you would like Rat on a Scooter to be an Olympic sport. I know, someone of you are quite good. You’re definitely better than I’ve gotten as I prepare for this devotional. Yes, I have been playing Rat on a Scooter to prepare to write this devotional. I have sought to pull some kind of spiritual lesson out of this popular app, at the request of some students at our school. J
Rat on the Run was a big hit on iPod touch and iPhone, created by the geniuses at Donut Games. It was on the top 10 list of downloads from the App store at one point. What makes this game special? Well, you go around leading your rat to cheese. You can’t control him once he’s moving, you can only change his direction once he hits a wall. Then you can turn him back or jump. It’s pretty simple, yet quite complex too. But that’s not why Rat on the Run is such a success. No, it was because included in the game of Rat on the Run, is the even simpler, better game called, Rat on a Scooter.
This is an incredibly, fast-paced game where you get to olley or ‘hop’ your scooter from platform to platform, doing nose grinds, back wheel grinds, and gathering peanuts (or wait, are they Cheetos?). Some of our own students have beaten the game – I don’t know how as I thought getting to 12 was good. These experts can get past 100 platforms. It’s incredible.
The following pictures are screen-shots of Rat on a Scooter XL. The original game was such a hit that Donut Games re-released a full version of the game. Now the rat can eat “cheetos” and cheese.
What is a spiritual correlation you might ask? Well, I could talk about the number of hours wasted playing this game, the amount of money people dish out for silly things these days or the consumerist attitudes of our current “touch-screen” society.
Instead, I leave you with this one thought: Think of life being made up of platforms that you have to hop to one after another. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail. Just like the Play Again screen will always show up when we fail, God always shows up. Both when we fail and when we succeed. He’s always there.
Joshua 1:9 ~ Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Prayer:
Dear God – Thanks that you’re always with us. You never leave us. No matter where we are, you are there also.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
