Ecclesiastes 9:10 ~ Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.
Wow. Watching Joannie Rochette compete in the Olympics was pretty awesome. Did anyone watch figure skating last week? When I saw Joannie Rochette, Kim Yu-Na, and Mao Asada [shown in order on reverse] compete for the short program a couple of nights ago, I was blown away. Then to see Joannie take bronze last night was really awesome. As you may know, Joannie Rochette’s mother passed away very suddenly in Vancouver just two days before she would skate. It was unexpected and a shock to her family. Joannie chose to continue competing and her father still watched with high hopes and a heavy heart from the stands. What a tragedy for Joannie, yet she continued with her dream. Yes, she was determined, but the support and strength that she received from people around her made the difference.
In a letter, Joannie wrote, "I'm fortunate enough to have a close family and friends that are helping me. I don't know if I could have gotten to where I am today without these incredible people supporting me.”
Think of your dreams and passions. If you really want to do something, do it. Go for it. Don’t let others hold you back as you pursue a dream. But how you do it, now that’s the important thing. If you’re climbing over everybody and trampling anyone who gets in your way, well, that’s going to be a miserable life. If you show courtesy and love for all as you pursue your passion, you’ll have a rewarding life.
Did you know that Joannie Rochette has used the same guy to sharpen her skates for her entire career? She has taken time to let him know that she appreciates him and his role in her achievements on the ice. She has taken time to build a friendship with him, a very good one that has lasted. Where might she be if she hadn’t built friendships that lasted?
How are you building friendships that last while you pursue your dreams? Don’t get so swept up that you hurt your friends and family along the way. You’ll want them there in the end, when you achieve your goal.
Prayer: Dear God – We want to do well in everything and we know that doing well means giving it our best. This may look different for different people, but you desire us to try our best in all things. Thanks for the reminders you give us even through the Olympics.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
