Devotional                            Day 1, Thursday, March 4rd, 2010

Moir Virtue

I have to admit, with all that talk about figure skating in Tuesday’s devotional, I have a strong desire to tell you that I’m more of a hockey guy. But here’s the thing: the ice dance from last week really got me hooked. I don’t know if I’ve watched this much figure skating since the days of Elvis Stojko and Kurt Browning.  Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were unbelievable in the ice dance, pulling out move after move and keeping it flawless. The word virtue by definition is doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong.  They did just that. They’re seen here enjoying the top of the podium [on back]. The American pair also had my attention – absolute perfection in a lot of ways.  The picture shown below is the signature move named, “The Goose.”  It was said, “Virtue looked almost angelic, balancing on his right thigh with her arms outstretched while he stayed in a deep-knee bend before she flipped forward and into his arms.”

I know I’m at the risk of sounding really wimpy. Here’s a guy who actually likes figure skating and ice dance. But seriously, the raw athleticism shown in Olympic sports makes my jaw fall to the floor many a time. If you’re laughing right now, just know this, Tessa Virtue probably has better abs than any student at our school. I missed the shot on TV, but my wife shouted from the living room, “WOOOAAAHHH, those are some serious abs!”

These two skaters have been together for about 10 years. Tessa battled back after a knee surgery and Scott spent many hours practicing his part with a hockey stick and sand bags, so that he could help Tessa with her part when she got better. After their gold medal win, Scott said, “I don't think either of us would be where we are without the other. We help each other on our bad days, and even push it a little more on the good days. To have each other up there on the podium, side by side, it's amazing.”

Who is your refuge? Who do you run to for support and strength? On the flip – who are you a refuge for?  For whom are you strength?  Consider making God your refuge and strength. He is always ready to help us.  Psalm 46:1 reads “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”

Prayer:

Dear God – Thanks that you will always be our refuge and strength even when others let us down. Help us to be supportive to others when they need strength to carry on.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
