The Buck Stops Here

Acts 20:35 ~ It is more blessed to give than to receive.

One day I became curious about where my money was disappearing. I didn’t make much working part time at the box company, so I wasn’t exactly loaded. But I earned enough to know I shouldn’t be constantly broke.

To solve the mystery, I got out my debit card statements and started scanning through all the itemized entries recorded at each point of purchase.

The new winter boots ate a wad. And it was hard to believe I’d spent $136 on gas in one week. The amount I paid for new tires made me wince, but what was I supposed to do, drive around on slicks? There was the day I bombed my bio exam and got wasted on waffle cones at TCBY, the pair of Nikes (because I felt guilty about TCBY), thirteen new downloads and new headphones to better enjoy them. The list became a blur of figures.

It’s odd, but I’d always thought of myself as a caring person, one who was concerned about others. But the truth is, I was most concerned about myself. My bank statement proved it. Priorities are generally mirrored by how you spend your money. Is it always for yourself?  Or do you consider how you can meet others’ needs?

What are some of those needs? Well, I’d ignored several just in the previous month. I thought of the family that got burned out of their house and lost everything. Maybe I could have made them a meal or bought them a sack of burgers. I could have done something similar for the homeless guy on the corner who looked like he was starving. A flower would have brightened the day of the elderly lady next door. Maybe I could have spent my time – just ten minutes to help with the dishes, call my grandfather, or help paint the living room.

Sometimes it’s hard to change selfish habits. But the task is made easier when I consider that everything I have is a gift from God. Freely I have received, so freely should I give (see Matthew 10:8).

Take some time to think about your own spending habits. Are they an appropriate representation of your priorities? What are the needs that are around you at present? How can you help?

Prayer:

Dear God – Thank you for taking care of us and giving us what we need. Help us to think beyond ourselves and get involved in helping others with their needs.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
