A Family Matter

Romans 8:15-16 ~ You received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.

One day when I was traveling through England, 7500 miles from home, I decided to call my parents. I wasn’t in trouble. I didn’t even need money. I simply wanted to chat.

So I bought a calling card, tracked down the nearest phone booth, punched in the access code and within a few moments heard their familiar voices. I now don’t remember anything we talked about, except that at the end of the conversation my father said, “Son, it’s 3 a.m. here . . . but we still love you. It’s good just to hear your voice.”

The sound of familiar voices can be very comforting. Given the emphasis the Bible places on prayer, I believe God longs just to hear our voices. And not only when we’re in trouble – sometimes just to chat.

Sometimes people make prayer seem so formal, yet Jesus was often very informal in the way he prayed. In the garden of Gethsemane, shortly before his crucifixion, Jesus grew deeply distressed. The Bible says he fell on the ground and prayed beginning, “Abba, Father. . . “(Mark 14:36). He addressed God not just as Father but also with the Aramaic word Abba, meaning “Daddy.”

Similarly, we are God’s own children. That means we have direct access to him, regardless of the time of day or night. Also, we needn’t address him as “Sir” or “Almighty God.” “Daddy” is good enough. It’s very personal – just the way you’d want to address your heavenly Father, who never tires of hearing his children’s voices.

Prayer:

Dear God – When we have no one to talk to, or no one who understands us, we know that we can talk to you. You will always be around to talk with us and you will always be interested in our lives and the things that are important to us.  Thank you.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
