Devotional                           Day 1, Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010

Big Kahuna

Mark 10:42-45 ~ Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

I once had a boss who treated everyone like dirt. She barked orders louder than a marine drill sergeant and screamed hysterically at the least provocation. “Do this!” “Do that!” She wanted no one to forget that she was the boss.

I was unlucky enough to report directly to her, and my office was just down the hall. So my head was on the chopping block daily. My only reprieve was when she left town.

One day when my boss was on a business trip, I entered her cavernous office and glanced around quickly to make sure no one else was nearby. Then I slipped into her big, comfortable chair, leaned back, and propped my feet on her sprawling desk.

Someday, I thought, I’ll be in charge.

This attitude of wanting to be in control is, I suppose, natural enough. We want to be the Big Kahuna and give orders rather than take them. We want to be honored and esteemed. We’d like strangers to know our names and recognize us on the street. We tire of being pawns on someone else’s chessboard and would like to wield a little power ourselves for a change.

The Bible, however, has quite a different emphasis. “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,” said Christ, adding that he himself vacated heaven not to be a ruler of the masses but to be a servant of many. He daily demonstrated this when he befriended the sick, the poor, the homeless.

“Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves,” Paul writes to the Philippians, adding, “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had” (Phil 2:3, 5).

Prayer:

Dear God – Teach us about humility and about putting others before ourselves. Help us to challenge the world’s thinking that we are the most important. Your kingdom is about thinking of others first and serving them.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
