Fault Finder
Proverbs 28:13 ~ People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
Whenever Judy blew it, she always blamed others. When I picked her up for a night out with friends and had to wait thirty minutes, she never even said she was sorry. She said her little sister had hogged the shower.
In a history class, she never accepted the responsibility for her low grades. Whenever she botched a test, it was because “I can’t believe the picky details they expect us to remember!” Or, “None of this stuff is important anyway. Who cares about ancient history two hundred years ago?”
It was the same in other areas of her life. When she forgot to add chocolate chips to the cookie dough, it was because I distracted her. And one day when she ran out of gas and was late for work, she blamed her dad for not filling the tank the day before. Finally I lost my patience with her.
“No matter what happens, it’s always someone else’s fault,” I said. “Are you perfect or something? Have you ever told anyone you were sorry?”
When I thought about Judy years later, I realized the basic difference between us was simply that she verbalized the kinds of excuses I often just mumbled silently to myself.
Do you mumble under your breath? Do you blame others silently or out loud? I think we are all guilty of this. Unfortunately, blaming others only deceives us. We have to remember that bad things will happen to us and we will have trouble in life. Nothing is perfect. No one is perfect. We’ll run into snags. Let’s start assuming that life won’t be smooth so that when hard times come, we are not surprised and we won’t need to blame anyone for our circumstances. If it’s something wrong we’ve done, we need to admit our mistakes, confess them and move on.
Prayer:
Dear God – Help us to take responsibility for the mistakes we make and not blame others for them. Help us to remember that problems will come our way and there’s no need to point fingers. Help us to turn to you for help when we’re faced with challenges.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
