Devotional Day 5, Thursday, Feb.11, 2010
Think. Pause.
Isaiah 37:33-34 ~ 33And this is what the Lord says [to Hezekiah] about the king of Assyria: “’His armies will not enter Jerusalem. They will not even shoot an arrow at it. They will not march outside its gates with their shields nor build banks of earth against its walls. 34The king will return to his own country by the same road on which he came. He will not enter this city,’ says the Lord.”
The insurance ads are right: “Life comes at you fast.” It’s in the heat of the moment, when everything’s a blur, that it’s easy to do things you end up regretting.
Panic and anxiety cause people to do irrational things. Maybe that’s what got Ahaz into trouble. Given the limited options he could see, Ahaz chose an irrational path that eventually led to his destruction.
Hezekiah faced the same situation; perhaps the danger was even more acutely felt under his reign. Assyria was stronger now and Judah was weaker than ever. Yet Hezekiah was able to find the pause button and gain some perspective. When he did so, he found that God lives in that pause, in that moment between feeling panic and acting in panic.
God wasn’t far away. He was right there. Waiting. Offering help. If only Ahaz had been willing to pause for a moment and reflect before acting.
It’s easy to criticize King Ahaz for doing something foolish, but how often do we find ourselves following the same pattern? We find ourselves under attack or in the midst of chaos and a flurry of downward-spiraling activity. We wonder what we’re to do as we feel the icy grip of panic take hold of our throats.
In those moments, can we summon the resolve to hit the pause button instead of fast-forward or rewind? Only in doing so will we be able to regain the perspective and composure necessary to navigate the uncharted waters of our day.
Stand there for a moment. Wait. Take a breath. Count to 10. Think. Reflect. Pray.
Trouble is never far, even for Christians. So what’s a person to do when life get hard? Thinking people do just that: think. Pause. Do what it takes to boost your trust in God. Prepare yourself to view circumstances from an eternal perspective and make choices based on faith in God.
If you haven’t worked on building up your trust in God, then you’re more likely to give in to panic like Ahaz did. But if you trust, you’ll find the time to pause. And if you stop and pray, you’ll find that God is there, in that quiet moment, just as He was for Hezekiah.
Prayer:
Dear God – It is easy to forget about you and to panic when times become difficult. We are more tempted to run than pause. Please keep us from making decisions out of fear and haste; help us to turn to you for help.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
