Panic or Pray
Isaiah 7:2 ~ The news had come to the royal court of Judah: “Syria is allied with Israel against us!” So the hearts of the king [Ahaz] and his people trembled with fear, like trees shaking in a storm.
Isaiah 37:14-15 ~ After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the Lord’s Temple and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed a prayer before the Lord.
It’s odd, isn’t it? Two different people can go through almost exactly the same circumstances and come away with vastly different conclusions. One thinks the world is out to get him; the other thinks she must have done something to deserve this. One finds reasons to give up; the other finds reasons to continue fighting.
We’ve all been in situations like that. Two people who have so much in common find themselves sharing a difficult time, but approach their problem from opposite perspectives and respond with different attitudes and behaviors.
What’s the difference? Usually the difference lies in what each individual believes – about their circumstances, about themselves, about other people, about the world, about God. We often think that our circumstances dictate our actions, but it’s not true. In between what happens to us and what we do in response, is what we tell ourselves about what just happened – that is, our beliefs.
Ahaz and Hezekiah were both threatened. The King of Assyria wanted to remove them from power and take away what was rightfully theirs. They found themselves in precisely the same situation, but their responses could not have been more different. Ahaz panicked. Hezekiah prayed.
What was the difference? What they believed. Ahaz assumed God was no help to him in his situation. Ahaz made up his mind what to do and not even God could talk him out of it. Hezekiah interpreted his circumstances differently. He believed God to be trustworthy and available, and his response reflected that belief.
Similar situations. Different responses. Different outcomes. This is the bridge between their story and ours. We all must decide what we believe on some core issues.
Is God as competent as He is portrayed in the Bible? Is He both willing and able to help? Is God’s personality toward his children more of an angry dictator or of a patient and loving heavenly Father? When we disagree with Him over what’s best, will we trust Him enough to do what He asks – even when it doesn’t seem to make sense?
Prayer:
Dear God – You hold all things together. All truth comes from you; help our thinking to be rooted in your truth so that we can make clear and sound judgments. Not based on emotions or wrong thinking, but on the sure foundation of the written and living Word.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
